What We Cover

WHAT WE COVER

Day 1 • Concepts and Prep:

We start by presenting the essential structural qualities of short-form films. Students learn to choose and shape a story that can be emotionally impactful in under 5 minutes.

PRE-PRODUCTION

Pre-production is an essential part of the process and one of the most consistently undervalued. We cover the basics of: casting, storyboarding, shooting scripts, production logistics & schedule design, and preparing for the interview.

FILM LANGUAGE

We’ll cover: establishing shots, over the shoulder shots, b-roll, and more.

Day 2 • Field Production and Hands On:

Each student has equipment in their hands as we demonstrate how to shoot b-roll and interviews that look and sound beautiful. We’ll use these tools to make a short movie together.

CAMERA

We introduce students to the pillars of camera operation: framing, white balance, shutter, iris, gain, and a few others. These are the things every student should check every time they turn on a camera and we’ll show them how to adjust depending on the circumstances.

AUDIO

Audio is the most important sensory aspect of any video. Audiences can forgive bad visuals, but they cannot forgive bad audio. We run through some basic audio tools and teach students tricks to collecting clean audio.

THE INTERVIEW

Most students of these workshops will go on to shoot interview-heavy videos. We teach them how to light and frame powerful interviews. We also cover how to make your subject comfortable and how to engage them while searching for the answers you’re after.
